Save Money on Your Long-Distance Move
Posted on: Monday, November 2nd, 2015Moving can be expensive, but it doesn’t have to be! By following a few simple tips and tricks during your long-distance move, your relocation doesn’t have to break the bank. Here, the Nor-Cal Moving Services team has long-distance moving tips for moving in San Francisco and beyond!
1. Get Free Moving Boxes
There are several ways that you can acquire free moving boxes. Many people ask large stores (grocery stores sometimes have thicker, sturdier boxes) for their extras, you can check online at places like Craigslist, Freecycle, or even U-Haul. You can also check with your moving company, family or friends to see if any of them have spare boxes you can use.
2. Toss, Recycle or Sell
Moves are calculated by weight, so what easier way to cut down on costs than to cut down on cargo? Before you move, make sure to take time and go through all of your belongings and only pack what you absolutely need to take with. For all of your other items that aren’t a necessity, you can choose to give them away, donate them to charity, or sell them online or through a garage sale. Save money but cutting down on your moving costs, plus put money back in your pocket with the money you make selling things!
3. Compare Costs
When debating whether to drive, fly, or ship your car to your new location, take the time to sit down and compare what it would cost for each option. Sometimes driving may seem more affordable, but with airline specials or promotions, flying could end up being the cheaper option. The same goes for shipping your car, selling it and re-buying a new one, or driving it all the way to your new place. The savings you’ll get from comparing costs before a big move will be well worth the time and effort.
4. Know What’s Covered
If you’re relocating to pursue a job opportunity and are offered relocation assistance, be sure that you and your employer have a clear understanding of what will be covered and what won’t—before you move. Whether it’s a set amount or certain aspects, such as the moving crew costs, hotel stays, etc., knowing what you do and do not have to pay for out-of-pocket will help you plan as cost-effectively as possible. You should also speak to an accountant to find out if any parts of your move are tax deductible.
5. Move During the “Off-Season”
If possible, schedule your move during the week or in “off-season” or less busy months, such as winter and fall. If you move during these times, moving companies are generally less busy, so you can have a better selection of available dates and be able to book well in advance—usually for lower prices, too.
